So I was recently researching supplements and foods that are great for the liver. In case you didn’t know the liver is quite the organ. It's responsible for many essential tasks and without a healthy liver, your body will perform at less than optimal levels. Also as you know or should know, here at Burton we promote a overall healthy lifestyle. Meaning, if we can get you to consume healthy foods rather than just supplements, we are doing our mission. Supplements supplement healthy eating. I want to always preface that as our mission statement. Ok, so as I was saying, I researched liver health and found some interesting studies. If you’re a coffee drinker you will especially like this. If you aren’t, no worries I have good news for you too!
I found some studies to back up the claim that coffee is one of the best beverages you can drink for liver health! Hold on it gets better. Best results come from those who drink at least 3 cups per day! Gets crazier! That study showed it to be effective with people who had chronic liver disease and resulted in a lower risk of death! (1) Coffee has shown to help reduce the risk of a common liver cancer and has shown positive effects on disease and inflammation. (2)(3)(4) Coffee has also shown to increase levels of the antioxidant glutathione. Antioxidants stabilize harmful free radicals, which are produced naturally in the body and can cause damage to the cells. (5) Is that not great news for us coffee drinkers!? Always consult with your doctor if you are sensitive to caffeine or have underlying health conditions. These are great studies but everyone's different in their overall health.
We can also go on to talk about the other health benefits of coffee on brain function and also weight loss but I’ll hold off on that for now. However, I think it’s safe to say coffee has some benefits. I would add to this that you should always choose quality when wanting the most out of a food. So make sure the coffee is organic and made from a good source. I choose organic frequently and will also support local coffee shops and the coffee they sell. Here’s to those morning joe’s!
If you’re not a coffee drinker, green tea is known to have some liver benefits as well. A very large Japanese study has shown that 5-10 cups of green tea per day had great results in liver health. (6) Another study also showed similar results when drinking black tea. (7).
These studies surprised me and as I already knew the many benefits, I never knew there were so many liver health benefits to coffee and green tea. Other foods that have shown to support liver health are blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit, grapes, nuts and fatty fish.
